Hidden Dangers of Nail Polish

Why you might want to think twice before reaching for that lacquer.

Keeping your hands and feet well manicured and pedicured should not compromise your health. But, many of the major nail polish manufacturers for products you might be using, include toxic chemicals in their lacquers. Behind the latest fashion colors, dangerous ingredients such as formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate also known as DBP and toluene are often lurking and can cause serious health problems. Formaldehyde is used as a hardening, preserving and embalming agent, DBP is a toxic plasticizer and toluene is commonly used as a paint-thinning agent (crazy, right?) When you take into consideration that your finger and toenails are ten times as porous and absorbent as your skin, you start to understand why it’s best to steer clear of those polishes with toxins.

Polishes with toxins can cause dangerous health-related issues. Prolonged, frequent wear of polishes with these chemicals can lead to absorption of high quantities of these chemicals and cause cancers, birth defects, damage to the nervous system and reproductive system.

A natural shine buff manicure is a much better option if you still want to indulge in a relaxing mani/pedi. If you feel like you need a lacquer, look for organic formulas labeled "Three Free". This label indicates there is no formaldehyde, DBP or toluene in the formula and that they are safe to use.
